Increasing your popularity and likability through mirroring

I first came across the term mirroring when I was working in sales. My team was taught mirroring as a technique to use to create additional rapport. Mirroring is in basic terms the act of mimicking another person to a degree. While this may seem crazy, mirroring has been proven to increase liability & appeal. Have you ever heard the term "Imitation is the finest form of flattery"? So we will look at the benefits of mirroring as well as how to mirror another person without seeming as if you are mocking another person.

Benefits of Mirroring

Mirroring is best used when you want a person to like you or to feel comfortable with your presence. This can be incredibly useful in business situations, as well as dating, or even just social simple social situations where you would like to build rapport. People are innately drawn to people who seem to understand them as well as those with whom they feel they have a great deal in common. The technique while it might sound crazy is truly innate and something you probably do subconsciously. As humans when communicating the majority of us do seem to have similar movements, speech patterns, etc when talking with someone we like. This is an innate part of our body language communication techniques that has been practiced since the beginning of time and is even evident in other species such as apes etc. The challenge with mirroring is to practice mirroring when we are dealing with someone whom we do not feel that immediate rapport.

How to Mirror

It sounds insane to mimic every single movement another person does, and it is a little frightening if someone starts to copy our every movement. Instead use mirroring as a general sort of copying. That being said, if someone is smiling you smile too, if someone is sad you can appear sad too. The general idea here is if someone is projecting an emotion through a facial expression as a person practicing mirroring it is important to mirror this emotion to that person. The mirroring says not only that you are listening, but also that you care and understand.

A good example: One of my prior positions was in the sales of advertising. As someone who has worked in advertising sales it is safe to say that advertising is not always a sure bet, but still it is necessary. Anyways, we got a guy on the line that had purchased advertising from us and he did not get the results he had presumed he would receive. In lieu of trying to calm him down our sales associate matched his anger. He made his voice a little louder and used an angry tone. This worked with this particular client because he felt that the associate understood his frustration and felt angry about the situation as well.

It is important to look at your orientation to another person as well. You sit if they are seated. To create rapport it is important to make sure your heads are about as level as possible, for dominance make sure yours is higher. Another technique that is a bit more difficult but very effective especially in romantic situations is to match another persons breathing rate. Breathing automatically put us at the same level. (If one person is breathing very hard while the other is breathing softly it is probable that they are experiencing different emotions (fear v relaxation)). Once the breathing rate is about the same the people will seem to balance and start to feel similar to one another. Give it a try and see what you think.

Your New Years Resolutions and How a Good Image Can Help

The beginning of January means many things to many people. The close of an old year, football bowl games, bitter cold winter weather, and for some a time to reflect and set new goals for the year ahead. It is a time to reset the clock and evaluate what you would like to do in the year ahead and reflect upon what you have accomplished. Sometimes these goals change however, it is always important to have clear goals in mind thus allowing a direction for our future. Having clear goals allows people to make decisions with greater ease as well as spend time focusing on various areas which can be improved in order to make these goals a reality. Two goals that seem to pop up rather frequently include a goal to lose weight or gain weight, a goal to find a new job when creating a path to achieve these goals it is important to consider how a strong image can help pave the road  to success!

Your Image and Your Weight

A healthy image can aid you in reaching yor weight goals

It is agreed by many that achieving the perfect weight is no easy feat. For some this can be an absolute nightmare. One thing to remember however, is that how we see ourselves can have a strong effect on success in this department. Therefore even if things are not ideal it is important to dress in a manner that projects self respect. This will not only tell others that you feel good about yourself, but it is also proven that a person who dresses and holds themselves in a way that makes them look good will feel more confident. This tends to show as people are less prone to fussing over their looks and more apt to focus on the task at hand. Some ways to do this include:

  1. Buy key items that you really love and make you feel great
  2. Keep a selection of basic garments on hand that can go with anything and fit you well
  3. For transitional weight loss make use of support garments to smooth the body thus giving garments the illusion of a better fit
  4. Purchase workout gear that you like, not feeling confident about how you look at the gym can hinder many from working out.

Your Image and Your Career

2009 brought a great deal to contend with on the career front. As companies downsize / close their doors it is crucial to do everything within ones personal power in order to maintain or obtain a job. A good professional image is crucial. It is very important to make sure that dress and personal hygiene communicate the need and desire to do business.  Dress should be in line with your chosen industry. A banker should dress a bit more conservative than a museum curator, while a graphic designer will dress more creatively than a politician. Keep in mind the company culture whenever attending anything work related ranging from a regular day at the office to an after work party. It is also important to maintain high standards outside of office related functions as well as it is never easy to predict whom you might run into at the grocery store. Some tips for a Professional Image include:

  1. Dress the part, even if you don't have the job or work for the company dress as if you did
  2. Keep your nails well trimmed and clean, this goes for men too
  3. Hair should be neat and clean, nothing says I don't care like bed head
  4. Be sure garments are clean and well pressed

It is important to keep in mind how what people wear and how they hold themselves does indeed project a particular message to the outside world. For most people the message that is projected can have a negative or positive effect on moods as well as productivity. Thus, it is of the utmost importance that we take the time to respect ourselves enough to be sure that we have a great image for the road ahead. Links à la Stocking Stuffers

Edited by Fashion Pulse Daily This week, as I've been getting geared up for the holiday season's shopping ( both loving and dreading it) via Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I couldn't help but compare the posts to stocking stuffers. Why? Because it felt like a nice, sentimental hodge podge of little items that although different, still fit together into the the bigger equation, hence my new phrase, "Links a la Stocking Stuffers!" Although I jest, I love the variety of posts this week, from how to style and what to wear including Retro Chick's guide to '40s hair for holiday parties, CoolMamaStyle.com's tuxedo jacket, The Coveted's adventures in Century 21 and What to Wear's Art Basel fashionable looks, to Prom Mafia's run in with Black Friday and SwaySwaySway's blissful tactics to keep your computer off on Cyber Monday. As expected, there was a fabulous round-up of links in the forum as well, all worthy of your eyeballs!

20 Things An Image Consultant Can Do For YOU!!

Ever since I decided to pursue a career in Image Consulting I have been asked one question more than any other. I understand the question and quite honestly would have never been able to answer this question with any certainty until about two years ago. The question is..

I understand you are an image consultant, but what do you do? And why would I benefit from hiring you?

As Image Consulting is a new field it is not shocking that this question comes up so often. People seem to understand the idea of what a consultant does. They walk into a situation and look at it objectively, from the point of view of someone who is trained to understand certain types of situations and to offer tools to improve the situation. The image part however, is so broad that it seems people do not understand what specifically that image consultant can do for them and how.

That being said I have written a list of benefits to having an Image Consultant:

 Image Consultants can...

1.)   Show you what colors will most flatter your personal skin tone.

2.)   Show you how to dress for your body, more specifically what sort of shapes will slim, bulk, elongate, shorten, etc.

3.)  Teach you what sort of things to wear that will flatter your personal facial shape

4.)  Teach you how to accessorize properly finding items that flatter your personal structure, as well as show you ways to accessorize to avoid looking to minimal or “over the top”

5.)   Work with you to determine your personal style

6.)  Help you clean out your closet (s) dresser drawers

7.)   Take your clean closets and donate the discarded clothes to local charities of your choice

8.)   Offer you suggestions regarding tailors, dry cleaners, and  cobblers, etc to help you repair garments in need

9.)  Take the clothes that you have and show you how to organize your belongings into a concise area creating ease for dressing in the future

10.)  Show you what sort of garments you might need in your closet to help you complete your wardrobe

11.)  Help you with shopping showing you what types of garments will fit you best as well as direct you towards brands that match your style / body type

12.) Keep you updated on new styles entering the stores as well as sales

13.)  Give you an idea of what is to come and what sort of looks are simply fads.

14.) Shop for you and later have you try on garments on your own time or bring garments to you to try in your own home.

15.)  Help you with shopping for gifts as well

16.)  Work with you and your goals be it relationship, career, self improvement etc, to show you what sort of looks might resonate with your desired outcome

17.)   Help teach you about body language cues that you give that work and those that do not work

18.)  Work with you to develop body language cues that will work on helping you obtain your goals

19.)   Show you ways to soften / harden, make professional, seem more fun your image

20.)  Work with you to set specific goals for yourself and create a timeline as well as steps in order to achieve your goals.
